The Taming of Redox‐Labile Phosphidotitanocene Cations

2019

International audience; Tame d0 phosphidotitanocene cations stabilized with a pendant tertiary phosphane arm are reported. These compounds were obtained by one-electron oxidation of d1 precursors with [Cp2Fe][BPh4]. The electronic structure of these compounds was studied experimentally (EPR, UV/Vis, and NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis) and through DFT calculations. The theoretical analysis of the bonding situation by using the electron localization function (ELF) shows the presence of π-interactions between the phosphido ligand and Ti in the d0 complexes, whereas dπ–pπ repulsion prevents such interactions in the d1 complexes. In addition, CH–π interactions were observed in seve…

Reversible O–H bond activation by an intramolecular frustrated Lewis pair

2019

The interactions of the O-H bonds in alcohols, water and phenol with dimethylxanthene-derived frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have been probed. Within the constraints of this backbone framework, the preference for adduct formation or O-H bond cleavage to give the corresponding zwitterion is largely determined by pKa considerations. In the case of the PPh2/B(C6F5)2 system and p-tBuC6H4OH, an equilibrium is established between the two isomeric forms which allows the thermodynamic parameters associated with zwitterion formation via O-H bond cleavage to be probed.

Structurally simple complexes of CO2

2015

The ability to bind CO2 through the formation of low-energy, easily-broken, bonds could prove invaluable in a variety of chemical contexts. For example, weak bonds to CO2 would greatly decrease the cost of the energy-intensive sorbent-regeneration step common to most carbon capture technologies. Furthermore, exploration of this field could lead to the discovery of novel CO2 chemistry. Reduction of complexed carbon dioxide might generate chemical feedstocks for the preparation of value-added products, particularly transportation fuels or fuel precursors. Implementation on a large scale could help to drastically reduce CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. However, literature examples of weak…

A molecular electron density theory study of the insertion of CO into frustrated Lewis pair boron-amidines: a [4 + 1] cycloaddition reaction

2019

The insertion of CO into hydrogenated boron-amidine 1 yielding five-membered diazaborolone (5DAB) 3 has been studied within the molecular electron density theory (MEDT) at the DFT ωB97X-D/6-311G(d,p) level. This is a domino process comprised of two consecutive reactions: (i) the dehydrogenation of 1 yielding the frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) boron-amidine 4, which quickly equilibrates with four-membered diazaborolone (4DAB) 2; and (ii) the addition of CO into FLP 4, yielding the final 5DAB 3. Analysis of the Gibbs free energies indicates that the extrusion of H2 demands a high ΔG≠ of 28.6 kcal·mol-1, being endergonic by 6.7 kcal·mol-1. The subsequent addition of CO into FLP 4 presents a low Δ…

Synthèse et caractérisation de phosphine, borane, amine sur plateforme ferrocène polyfonctionnelle

2016

Ferrocene platforms are useful in coordination chemistry and catalysis thanks to their robustness and versatile functionalization. Ferrocene backbone allows the implantation of several key functional groups in a restricted space, inducing close proximity and potential polyfunctional cooperation (see for instance ferrocenyl polyphosphine chemistry). Ansa ferrocene and ferrocene bearing conformational control inducing groups maximizing the proximity of key groups have been widely reported. The first part of this thesis focuses on the synthesis of new borylated cyclopentadienyl, and their use in formation of borylated metallocenes bearing conformational constraints. NMR analysis and DFT calcula…

A computational and conceptual DFT study on the mechanism of hydrogen activation by novel frustrated Lewis pairs.

2015

A computational and conceptual density functional theory (DFT) study on the mechanism of molecular hydrogen activation by a set of three frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) was performed at the ωB97X-D/6-311G(d,p) level of theory. A reduced model and other two prototypes derived from experimental data, based on the donor nitrogen and acceptor boron atoms, were used. Analysis based on the energy results, geometries and the global electron density transfer at the TSs made it possible to obtain some interesting conclusions: (i) despite the well-known very low reactivity of molecular hydrogen, the catalytic effectiveness of the three FLPs produces reactions with almost unappreciable activation energi…

Dihydrogen Activation by Antiaromatic Pentaarylboroles

2010

Facile metal-free splitting of molecular hydrogen (H(2)) is crucial for the utilization of H(2) without the need for toxic transition-metal-based catalysts. Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) are a new class of hydrogen activators wherein interactions with both a Lewis acid and a Lewis base heterolytically disrupt the hydrogen-hydrogen bond. Here we describe the activation of hydrogen exclusively by a boron-based Lewis acid, perfluoropentaphenylborole. This antiaromatic compound reacts extremely rapidly with H(2) in both solution and the solid state to yield boracyclopent-3-ene products resulting from addition of hydrogen atoms to the carbons alpha to boron in the starting borole. The disruption…

A DFT Study of the Molecular Mechanisms of the Diels−Alder Reaction between Cyclopentadiene and 3-Phenyl-1-(2-pyridyl)-2-propen-1-one − Role of the Z…

2002

The molecular mechanism of the Diels−Alder reaction between cyclopentadiene (1) and 3-phenyl-1-(2-pyridyl)-2-propen-1-one (2) in the absence and in the presence of a Zn2+ Lewis acid catalyst has been studied by quantum mechanical calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory. A continuum model was selected to represent the effects of the water as solvent. For the uncatalyzed process, two channels, endo and exo, were characterized, and the mechanism corresponded to an asynchronous concerted reaction associated with a [4+2] process. The presence of a Lewis acid catalyst changed the mechanism drastically, the reaction taking place by a polar stepwise mechanism. In the first step, a C−C sigm…

Insertion Reactions of Neutral Phosphidozirconocene Complexes as a Convenient Entry into Frustrated Lewis Pair Territory

2016

International audience; Neutral phosphidozirconocene complexes [Cp2Zr(PR2)Me] (Cp=cyclopentadienyl; 1a: R=cyclohexyl (Cy); 1b: R=mesityl (Mes); 1c: R=tBu) undergo insertion into the Zr-P bond by non-enolisable carbonyl building blocks (O=CRR), such as benzophenone, aldehydes, paraformaldehyde or CO2, to give [Cp2Zr(OCRRPR2)Me] (3-7). Depending on the steric bulk around P, complexes 3-7 react with B(C6F5)(3) to give O-bridged cationic zirconocene dimers that display typical frustrated Lewis pair (FLP)/ambiphilic ligand behaviour. Thus, the reaction of {[Cp2Zr(-OCHPhPCy2)][MeB(C6F5)(3)]}(2) (10a) with chalcone results in 1,4 addition of the Zr+/P FLP, whereas the reaction of {[Cp2Zr(-OCHFcPCy…
